The village

One of the authentic villages of Pindos, built at an altitude of 1000m. and within walking distance of Elati and Pertouli, which still preserves stone-built houses of the 19th century.

Agios Nikolaos or otherwise Kamnai is surrounded by the peaks of Kap-Gras (Vlach name meaning "fat head") and Xerovouni. The top of Cap-Grass became an observatory for thieves during the Turkish occupation, as that point gave them the opportunity to monitor the wider area from Mesochora to Gardiki and Athamania.

As in most villages of Aspropotamos, so in Kamnai, in winter there is silence, since the permanent residents are few. In the summer, however, the village comes alive again, when the Kamnaites reunite on the occasion of the village festival and the celebration of Agia Paraskevi on July 26.

A special name, with a deep history in time, which, however, remains unchanged until today and intrigues anyone who hears it for the first time. The name of the settlement comes from the Slavic Kamy, Kamene which means stone, stoneland. It is said that in antiquity the inhabitants had created kilns in this location, which they used for their pots but also to make tiles, jars, etc. Then, in 1955 the settlement was renamed "Psyche", until 1961, when it finally took the name "Agios Nikolaos", after the parish church of Agios Nikolaos.
